In the past I've struggled with sleeping - especially when I was in a mental health crisis. Also when my brain is active I can find it more difficult to get to sleep.
Here are a few ways that I try to aid my sleep (that I've read can be helpful):Going to bed at the same time each day and trying to wake up at the same time.
Having a night-time setting on my phone, and downloading a blue light filter for laptops of computers. As the blue light emitted from screens can disrupt sleep.
Having a milk drink before bed. Some people recommend warm milk, but I just have a cold milk drink and do notice this helps.
Doing a mindfulness meditation, or specifically a mindfulness meditation targeted towards sleeping before bed on phone. I have downloaded multiple ones on my phone from YouTube that I do from time to time.
Reading before bed ! I'm currently reading a book called "The World Walk" and as well as Lord of the Rings - Return of the King. I enjoy both books and it helps get my brain get in a tired state. Especially when preoccupied with thoughts.
Trying to not get too stimulated before bed by talking to people too much and listening to relaxing music an hour before bed can help me.
Trying to do a bit of exercise during the day & not doing exercise after around 6:30pm - as I've heard and notice that can hinder sleep.
Reducing caffeine & especially after 4pm in case it affects sleep.
Making my bed to get a more restful sleep.
Not eating too much before bed, and drinking enough water during the day so I don't need to drink much before bed. Then stopping around hour before bed, as needing the toilet in the night disrupts sleep.
Listening to relaxing music on phone while trying to sleep! (at a low volume) Which turns off automatically after 3 hours. (I have created a playlist with just the relaxing music file in it and once playlist ends the music stops). This is a great help and having some constant background noise makes me care less about other noises, that in the past have made it more difficult to sleep.
Focusing on my breathe while in bed. Sometimes I try to breathe for 1 second, hold for 1 second breathe out for 1 second hold. Then increase the durations by a second each time until I get to 10. Then I come down back to one and repeat. This repetitive task where I'm being totally mindful of my breathe helps relax my brain and get me in a more tired state. There is another type of breathing called 4-7-8 breathing, that could be worth looking into that can help people fall asleep easier.
Trying not to worry about sleeping. Even if I'm not sleeping well I feel more restful the next day if I just let sleep can it's own time and stressing all night that I'm not sleeping well doesn't help me.
